Nutritional comparison table

Comparing 100g of skinless breast from each bird:

NutrientChickenTurkey
Calories165 kcal135 kcal
Protein31g30g
Total fat3.6g1g
Saturated fat1g0.3g
Cholesterol85mg65mg
Iron1mg1.4mg
Zinc0.9mg2mg

Which has more protein?

The difference is minimal: chicken provides 31g of protein per 100g versus 30g for turkey. Both rank among the most efficient lean protein sources available. For an 175-lb athlete needing 160g of protein daily, 300g of either covers almost 60% of the requirement.

Which has less fat?

Turkey wins here clearly: only 1g of fat per 100g versus 3.6g for chicken. If you're in a cutting phase or strict caloric deficit, turkey gives you more caloric margin for other foods. However, 3.6g of fat is still not high — both are considered very lean meats.

Micronutrients: turkey surprises

Turkey contains more zinc (2mg vs 0.9mg) and more iron (1.4mg vs 1mg). Zinc is crucial for testosterone synthesis and muscle recovery. Iron supports oxygen transport in blood. In this aspect, turkey has a slight edge.

Price and availability

Chicken breast is generally 20–30% cheaper than turkey. Chicken is also more versatile in the kitchen and easier to find fresh. Turkey is often available as deli meat or processed, and fresh turkey breast can be harder to find depending on location.

Culinary versatility

  • Chicken: grill, oven, wok, stews, salads, sandwiches, tacos, curry. Absorbs marinades and spices very well.
  • Turkey: grill, oven, burgers, homemade deli meat. Tends to dry out more easily when cooking and requires more attention.

Final verdict

For most people, chicken breast is the best option for its price-quality ratio and versatility. If you want the leanest option possible (competition, extreme cut), turkey is slightly superior. Both are excellent — include both in your weekly rotation for greater nutritional variety.
